Abstract Funding Acknowledgements Type of funding sources: None. Purpose. Cardiovascular involvement in systemic sclerosis (SSc) is frequent, often subtle, and associated with poor prognosis. Our aim was to compare echocardiographic data SSc patients controls, assess parameters able predict the development cardiovascular involvement. Methods. We enrolled 756 (Group 1) without a previous diagnosis cardiac nor pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), 614 healthy controls 2) matched for age 1 54.9 ± 14.6 years vs Group 2 54.4 12.1, p = 0.6), sex (7.3% 7.2%, 0.8), prevalence (17.8% 19.8%, 0.2). All subjects underwent comprehensive transthoracic 2D Doppler echocardiography, including tissue imaging analysis (TDI). Five hundred two were followed-up PAH, left-sided heart failure (LHF), right-sided (RHF), need implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) considered as events. Results. Compared showed worse left right ventricular systolic diastolic function, hemodynamics ventricle-arterial coupling (tricuspid annulus plane excursion over artery pressure, TAPSE/sPAP) (Table). After median follow-up 35 moths, 45 composite events (PAH, LVH, RHF ICD) occurred. In multivariate model, only ejectioin fraction (EF) TAPSE/sPAP had independent prognostic value Conclusions. overt no PAH display subtle impairments biventricular systo-diastolic function coupling. Association between atherosclerosis and parenchymal lung involvement in systemic sclerosis
Background: Systemic sclerosis is an autoimmune disease affecting connective tissues, (including epidermal, subepidermal, microvasculature, etc.), leading to various extent of end-organ damage. The leading cause of mortality among these patients is lung involvement. The cardiovascular events happen more frequently in patients suffering systemic scleroderma, comparing to healthy population. This...

Articular involvement is frequent in SSc. It contributes to disability and compromises patients' quality of life. Different aspects of articular involvement have been described, ranging from arthralgia and arthritis to joint contracture and tendon sheath involvement. Recent cohort studies examining clinical and radiographic aspects of SSc have clarified the frequency of articular involvement an...

OBJECTIVE To determine the frequency and histological characteristics of pericardial involvement in systemic sclerosis. METHOD Necropsy sections of pericardium from 44 patients with systemic sclerosis were studied, together with sections from 19 age/sex matched controls. Sections were stained with haematoxylin and eosin, acid toluidine blue, and elastic van Gieson. Mast cells were counted in ...

Joint involvement in SSc affects 46-97% of patients with SSc [3]. Generalized inflammatory arthralgias with pain and stiffness are the usual presentation of articular involvement. All joints may be affected, mainly the fingers (in particular the Metacarpophalangeal (MCP) and Proximal Interphalangeal (PIP) joints), wrists and ankles. Franck arthritis is less common. The onset of this latter may ...
